Dark ruby in colour, plum cake, liquorice and prune bouquet with a viscous, soft, lingering finish on the palate. Like all my Zinfandels, this is great drinking now, better in 2015.
A textbook season with a mild spring and good rainfall, then a benign, dry summer. Following the drought from 2002 onwards, this was a godsend. We crop-thinned the unripe fruit twice in the vineyard which helped produce outstanding fruit.
Fermented in an open vat using natural yeast with an elevated temperature of ferment to 30oc, then matured in American oak cask for 20 months.

The richly spiced plum cake bouquet loudly proclaims its varietal presence, and the palate positively ripples with ripe, prune and plum flavours, backed by soft tannins. "Deep red/purple; good colour. Clean, bright, fresh aroma of ripe fruits, with raspberry predominating. Sweetly rich in the mouth with good concentration and weight, fine tannins which taste ripe and balanced and provide the right kind of structure. Good length and balance: an exemplary zinfandel with no sign of under-and-overripe fruit syndrome, nor excessive alcohol. Delicious. 93 Points"

"It's been three vintages since the previous LOWE Zin (2006) but the 2009 makes it worth the wait. Dry-grown bush vines have struggled in the last two difficult vintages but have held enough in reserve to produce rish raspberry fruitiness with hints of rose, tar, liquorice and leather - all hallmarks of fine zinfandel. Richly textured, the 15.3% alcohol is completely integrated with the fine, dusty tannins a balance for the sweet fruit character. 5 STAR"
